From humble beginnings...

In January 2012, the Wolfe Island Network (WIN) Youth Advisory Committee (Township of Frontenac Islands as a lead agency) was awarded a Heart and Stroke Foundation Spark Advocacy Grant ($5,000). The funding was used to advocate for the development of a community garden as a way of engaging youth – and all ages – in physical activity and healthy eating.

A program coordinator was hired and worked closely with the Community Centre Board (CCB). In April 2012, a community ad hoc group was formed to discuss project goals, design and potential initiatives related to the shared space. In summer 2012, Township dedicated a plot on Centre Street in the village as the community garden site. The ad hoc group (through Township) was successful in receiving a $5,000 grant from TD Friends of the Environment Foundation to assist with some of the initial design during the summer of 2013.

Community input was sought through a neighborhood meeting (with immediate neighbors of the lot) and a community fair (open to all residents). As well, there is an active Facebook page, Wolfe Island Community Garden. Information gathered about the interests and concerns of residents helped a local landscaper, in collaboration with the management team, create a final design that incorporated many diverse and complementary ideas.

... come great things!

Donations are rushing in – money and materials – and so many local volunteers are offering their wonderful services to contribute to a great community initiative. Want to get involved?
